History of the University of Wisconsin System
The UW System was founded in 1848 as the University of Wisconsin–Madison. The university was originally a private institution, but it became a public university in 1866. In the years that followed, the UW System expanded to include additional campuses and colleges. In 1971, the UW System was created by the Wisconsin Legislature to consolidate the state’s public higher education institutions.
